A network of roadside environmental sensor stations designed to monitor and report weather and pavement conditions. Each system typically includes an Environmental Sensor Station (ESS) that collects data such as air and pavement temperature, wind speed and direction, precipitation type, visibility, and road surface conditions. RWIS data is used to monitor real time atmospheric and surface conditions and to support decision making.
